Golfer's Elbow / Tennis Elbow
Treatments available for arm & hand problems
- Osteopathy
- Bowen Therapy
- Medical Acupuncture
Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis) is similar to tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), but is less common. Apart from in the acute stages, there is little or no inflammation present in these syndromes; rather they are degenerative conditions of the tendons around the elbow joint.
Sports which involve forceful movements of the upper limb (like tennis, golf, archery and cricket) can aggravate these conditions, so you may need to reduce these activities and get advice about better posture or improved technique when using your racquet, golf club, etc.
Symptoms usually worsen after repetitive movements at the wrist, and improvement usually occurs after rest. As well as pain, you may experience hand weakness or 'pins and needles' if the nerves are irritated.
Treatment would aim to stimulate the body's healing response and once symptoms reduce, to provide suitable exercises to strengthen the muscles of the arm.
Treatment may include friction massage and other soft tissue techniques, and also joint articulation to ensure there are no restrictions preventing normal ranges of movement at the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Medical acupuncture is sometimes useful to reduce painful symptoms whilst the body repairs any tissue damage.
