What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force. The Usui System of Natural healing is the art of channelling Universal Energy as a form of hands on healing.
Reiki was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui in some Sanskrit writings which were 2500 years old. He found them after he had studied Christianity, Buddhism and old Japanese writings, travelling widely in his search.
To activate the power, Mikao Usui spent many weeks meditating until he found a way to channel this energy and pass it on to others. Reiki was brought to the West in the late 1930’s by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American living in Hawaii. Now Reiki has spread to every country in the World. People from all walks of life and from all religious beliefs practice Reiki. It is the simplicity of Reiki that attracts. Reiki is primarily for one’s own use as a means of self-healing, also as a path for personal growth and transformation.
As a therapy to use on others it is not only healing but deeply relaxing. It re-balances the body by working on the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical levels, giving one a feeling of well-being, peace and tranquillity. Reiki treats the cause of disease rather than the symptoms and speeds up the natural healing process. Everyone has the ability to channel Universal Energy, but in most people it lies dormant.
A Reiki Session
The client relaxes fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner sweeps the aura (energy field), then very gently begins to lay his hands on, infusing the body front and back with pure Reiki energy for about one hour. Most people receive Reiki as heat emanating from the practitioner’s hands but common experiences also include tingling, a sense of being somewhere between sleep and meditation or even a coolness around the body.
The benefits of therapeutic touch are well known in medical science but Reiki seems to go one stage further. By working over energy centres known as CHAKRAS, Reiki flows into the body bringing healing and renewal. Stress, fear, anger, grief and loneliness often manifest in our bodies as pain, illness or disease. The beauty of Reiki is that we do not need to talk. We simply ask for healing and we receive it at a very deep, personal level. It is often said “Remove the cause and there shall be no effect.” Reiki is the perfect antidote to modern day stresses and strains and can unblock creativity whilst boosting energy levels to a new high.
Phyllis Lei Furumoto, Grand Master explains:
"In my experience, Reiki energy is not directed by me or controlled by me. I place my hands on myself and the energy moves through my body. I can actually feel a physical sensation of warmth and sometimes, tingling. It is as though I can feel the blood moving through my vessels.
This is one of the gifts of Reiki – to experience the energy instead of having to “have the faith” that energy is present. It is similar to feeling the wind on your face and body instead of standing in a house where you can only see the effects of the wind.
Another gift of Reiki is the feeling of being reconnected to my source of energy. Some people have described it as coming home, some say it is like being plugged in again. I have the sense that I knew this feeling in the past and now am fully in touch with the energy again, without effort.
When I feel “whole” it is easy to love myself. When I find that place in myself, it is also the part of me that is able to love each human being as a part of myself. In Reiki you are given the gift of having your memory and your innate power reawakened."
